As a languages graduate in Italian and German, Bolzano is a fascinating and
unique environment, as the two languages are equally present in daily life, although the
German dialect spoken here is quite different from the Hochdeutsch I’m used to hearing in
Hamburg and Berlin. Hopefully by the end of my time here I’ll have picked up a few phrases
in Südtirolese! Talking to students and staff about their backgrounds, hobbies, language
abilities and career plans (in English, Italian and German!) has already made me reflect on
what I can take from this experience, linguistically, culturally and professionally. I’ve really
enjoyed my first month here being back at school and look forward to the next 6 months of
working and learning!
